Photograph: Scrapping of the SS Great Eastern, c1889-1890

Gelatine dry plate glass negative photographs showing the scrapping of the SS Great Eastern in 1889-1890 at Rock Ferry on the River Mersey, by Henry Bath and Son.
View of the starboard side of the Great Eastern, with the ship on land (the tide is out). A rope or chain runs from the bow of the ship out of shot on the right hand side of the image, with another dropping down onto the land from one of the anchor holes. A small boat or barge is visible, and next to that a ladder. Another boat or barge is just visible at the stern. The hull is intact up to the water line, and in substantial areas above that. In the middle of the ship, surrounded by scaffolding or the remains of the decks, is either the remains of the funnel or mast. Towards the stern there appears to be the remains of the paddle case. In the back ground behind the stern there are one or two ships, one of which appears to be a steamer. On the river behind the bow is another ship

EDITORS COMMENTS
This gelatine dry plate glass negative photograph captures a significant moment in history - the scrapping of the SS Great Eastern in 1889-1890. The image, taken by Henry Bath and Son, showcases the starboard side of the colossal ship as it rests on land during low tide at Rock Ferry on the River Mersey. The attention to detail is remarkable; one can observe a rope or chain extending from the bow of the ship towards an unseen destination on the right side of the frame. Another rope hangs down onto land from one of its anchor holes. Adjacent to this scene, a small boat or barge comes into view along with a ladder nearby. Towards the stern, another boat or barge emerges faintly. Despite being dismantled for scrap metal, remnants of its grandeur remain visible above water level and scaffolding surrounds what appears to be either part of its funnel or mast amidst debris from former decks. The remains of paddle cases are also discernible towards the rear. Intriguingly, other ships dotting the background add depth to this historical tableau; notably, there is a steamer positioned behind SS Great Eastern's bow while one or two more vessels can be spotted near its stern. This extraordinary photograph serves as an invaluable testament to both engineering marvels and their eventual fate while offering viewers a glimpse into maritime life during that era.
