EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Gaspard Bauhin, a renowned Swiss botanist who made significant contributions to the fields of botany and anatomy during the 16th and 17th centuries. Born in 1560, Bauhin's passion for plants led him to study medicine in Italy, France, and Germany before returning to Basel. In 1588, he achieved the prestigious position of professor of botany and anatomy at his alma mater. Bauhin's most notable botanical work was "Pinax Theatri Botanici" published in 1596. This comprehensive masterpiece became a seminal reference for plant classification and taxonomy. His expertise extended beyond botany as well; his major anatomical work, "Theatrum Anatomicum Infinitis Locis Auctum" published in 1592, solidified his reputation as an accomplished scientist. The genus name Bauhinia pays homage to both Gaspard Bauhin and his brother Jean-Baptiste Bauhin – another prominent figure in the field of botany. Their collective efforts have left an indelible mark on scientific history. Captured by Pierre Roch Vigneron through a lithograph from Galerie Medicale between 1825-1829, this monochrome artwork provides us with a glimpse into the face that revolutionized our understanding of flora and human anatomy. It serves as a testament to Gaspard Bauhin's enduring legacy as one of Switzerland's most influential scientists.
