Garrett Serviss, US science writer

Garrett Putnam Serviss (1851-1929), US science and science fiction writer. Serviss studied science as an undergraduate, obtained a law degree, and then worked as a journalist. He wrote numerous articles, columns and fifteen books popularising and explaining science to the public, especially in the field of astronomy. He toured the USA in the 1890s delivering the Urania Lectures. His science fiction works included The Sky Pirate (1909) and The Moon Maiden (1915). This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USAs earliest news picture libraries. The bulk of the Bain images date from the 1890s to the 1930s
