Desert rose tree
Desert rose tree (Adenium obesum sokotranum) in a rocky landscape. This subspecies of the desert rose is endemic to the Socotran archipelago of islands, meaning that it is found nowhere else. It has a thick, bottle-shaped trunk to conserve water. The islanders traditionally use the poisonous bark of the desert rose to kill small fish for bait. They also tie strips of the bark around the necks of their livestock to deter wild cats. Socotra is located in the Indian Ocean at the mouth of the Gulf of Aden, 340 kilometres (km) from mainland Yemen and 250km from the coast of Somalia. Its isolation has led to the evolution of a unique flora and fauna

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable beauty of a Desert rose tree (Adenium obesum sokotranum) in its natural habitat, nestled within a rocky landscape. Endemic to the Socotran archipelago, this subspecies of desert rose is an exclusive gem found nowhere else on Earth. Its survival in such harsh conditions is made possible by its distinctive thick and bottle-shaped trunk, which efficiently conserves water. The islanders have long recognized the unique properties of this species. They ingeniously utilize the poisonous bark of the desert rose to catch small fish for bait, showcasing their resourcefulness and deep connection with nature. Additionally, they tie strips of the bark around their livestock's necks as a deterrent against wild cats, highlighting how local communities adapt and find innovative solutions using what surrounds them. Located at the mouth of the Gulf of Aden in the Indian Ocean, Socotra remains isolated from mainland Yemen and Somalia. This isolation has fostered an extraordinary evolution resulting in a rich diversity of flora and fauna found only here. The vibrant blooms amidst rugged terrain create an awe-inspiring sight that exemplifies both resilience and uniqueness. Through this stunning image captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded not only of our planet's breathtaking landscapes but also of its delicate ecosystems that deserve our utmost care and protection.
