Brachiopod fossil shell

Brachiopod fossil shell from the 500 million-year- old Burgess Shale rock. This shell is a Micromitra burgessensis shell. This animal was a brachiopod, a marine invertebrate inhabiting a bivalve shell, similar to todays marine molluscs. The structure of brachiopod bodies were different, but they are generally still classified with the molluscs. They were common between 590 and 65 million years ago, but only a few species survive today. The Burgess Shale rocks, found in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, were formed by avalanches of fine mud that preserved soft tissue details rarely found in the fossil record. They also recorded the Cambrian Explosion, a variety of newly evolved body shapes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable Brachiopod fossil shell from the ancient Burgess Shale rock, estimated to be around 500 million years old. The intricate details of this Micromitra burgessensis shell offer a glimpse into the fascinating world of marine invertebrates that once inhabited our oceans. Brachiopods were unique creatures that resided within bivalve shells, similar to today's marine molluscs. Although their body structure differed from molluscs, they are generally classified together due to certain similarities. These organisms thrived between 590 and 65 million years ago, but only a handful of species have managed to survive till present times. The Burgess Shale rocks, located in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, hold immense significance for paleontologists. Formed by avalanches of fine mud, these rocks have preserved soft tissue details rarely found elsewhere in the fossil record. Additionally, they serve as an invaluable repository documenting the Cambrian Explosion – a period marked by an explosion of diverse and newly evolved body shapes. This extraordinary photograph not only captures the beauty and intricacy of this ancient brachiopod shell but also serves as a testament to our ever-growing understanding of Earth's history through paleontology. It is courtesy of Science Photo Library and offers us a window into an era long gone yet forever imprinted in stone.
