Mounted Prints from Science Photo Library
Artists impression of Tertiary period landscape
Artists impression of a Tertiary period landscape. This period extended from 65 to about 2 million years ago and is divided into five epochs: the Paleocene, Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene and Pliocene. Dinosaurs died out early on in the Tertiary and mammals progressed rapidly. Anthropoid apes appeared, and towards the end the present forms of the continents developed. There was considerable volcanic activity, and it is thought that the Himalayas (amongst other mountain ranges) originate from the Miocene epoch. Temperatures dropped signalling the beginning of the ice-ages at the end of the Pliocene

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an artist's vivid interpretation of a Tertiary period landscape, transporting us back in time to a world that existed between 65 and about 2 million years ago. The Tertiary period is divided into five epochs: the Paleocene, Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene, and Pliocene. During this era, dinosaurs faded away while mammals flourished at an astonishing pace. Anthropoid apes emerged on the scene as well, foreshadowing our own evolutionary journey. The artwork also captures the dynamic geological changes that occurred during this epoch. Volcanic activity was rampant, with some experts believing that iconic mountain ranges like the Himalayas originated from volcanic eruptions during the Miocene epoch. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing landscape depiction, it becomes evident how much our planet has transformed over millions of years. Towards the end of the Tertiary period, temperatures dropped significantly heralding the onset of ice-ages during the Pliocene epoch. It was during these climatic shifts that present-day continental formations began to take shape. This awe-inspiring print not only offers us a glimpse into Earth's ancient past but also serves as a testament to mankind's relentless curiosity about our planet's history and evolution.
