1860 Duncans prehistoric epoch panorama

Tinted lithograph (colour enhanced version) by W.R. Woods appearing as the frontis to Isabella Duncans " Pre-Adamite Man". The layers of the drawing are appropriately stacked like the strata of the rock in which they are found, indicating a partial discontinuity of separate creations - (see for contrast Reynolds Antidiluvian World in this library). Most marked is the division between the present and the rest - sealed by a global ice age below. For Duncan this line marked a discontinuity from the Biblical descendents of Adam - and the earlier Pre-Adamites who ruled a former world. The Preadamites left handaxes but their mortal remains were transmuted and transported elsewhere in the Universe by her theory. The extinct faunal reconstructions shown here are based on Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins and include Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, Hylaeosaurus etc (see his prints in this image collection)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and thought-provoking artwork of W. R. Woods, depicting the 1860 Duncans prehistoric epoch panorama. The tinted lithograph, enhanced with vibrant colors, serves as the frontis to Isabella Duncan's groundbreaking work "Pre-Adamite Man". The layers of this drawing are meticulously arranged to mimic the stratification found in rocks, symbolizing a partial discontinuity between separate creations. A stark division is evident between our present world and a former one sealed by a global ice age below. For Duncan, this demarcation represented a shift from Biblical descendants of Adam to earlier rulers known as Pre-Adamites. According to her theory, these Pre-Adamites left behind handaxes but their mortal remains were transmuted and transported elsewhere in the Universe. The extinct faunal reconstructions depicted here draw inspiration from Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins' work and include awe-inspiring creatures like Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, and Hylaeosaurus. This extraordinary illustration not only captures the imagination but also delves into religious beliefs surrounding fossils and ancient history. It explores concepts such as antediluvian worlds and challenges traditional notions about human origins. Paul D. Stewart's photograph beautifully preserves this remarkable piece of art that intertwines science, religion, paleontology, and artistic vision into an intriguing visual narrative.
