EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Mrs. Cartwright's provocative sculptures, showcasing her unique artistic vision. Amongst the spacious lawns of Banacle Edge in Witley, Surrey, these bronze masterpieces stand tall and demand attention. One such sculpture is "Leda and the Swan" where a colossal swan with a deliberately phallic neck exerts its dominance over a vulnerable naked girl, forcefully pushing her into the water. Another piece titled "Ondine" portrays a young woman being dragged beneath the surface of a pond by her heels, evoking both fascination and discomfort. "Idealists" depicts a nude man suspended from an oak tree by his wrists, symbolizing vulnerability and questioning societal norms. And then there is "Lucifer" defying gravity as he stands on his head, challenging conventional perceptions. Mrs. Lucette Cartwright has gained recognition for her controversial yet powerful sculptures that explore themes of sensuality and eroticism. Born to French parents in London, she honed her craft at Regent Street Polytechnic under the guidance of Harold Brownsward, earning herself the prestigious Polytechnic Gold Medal. Selected works by Mrs. Cartwright will be showcased alongside those of 14 other prominent British sculptors at an upcoming exhibition organized by G. L. C. , set to take place in Holland Park in April 1975 (75-2255-006).
