This lantern slide depicts an Indaba, or meeting, being held at Government House in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (then known as Rhodesia) during the late 1890s. The Indaba was a significant event, as it celebrated the arrival of the railway line in the city. The railway line was a game-changer for Bulawayo and the surrounding region, opening up new opportunities for trade, commerce, and communication. The image shows a large gathering of people, mostly men, seated on the grass in front of Government House. Some are dressed in European attire, while others wear traditional African clothing. In the foreground, a man stands proudly next to a large lantern, which would have been used to project the image onto a screen during presentations.
