Thessaloniki - Greece - The Heptapyrgion Fortress

The Heptapyrgion (modern Eptapyrgio), also known by its Ottoman Turkish name Yedi Kule - a Byzantine and Ottoman-era fortress situated on the north-eastern corner of the acropolis of Thessaloniki in Greece. In both languages the translation is " Fortress of Seven Towers", however it actually features ten, and was probably named after the Yedikule Fortress in Istanbul, Turkey. Date: 1927

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the imposing Heptapyrgion Fortress, also known as Eptapyrgio, standing proudly on the north-eastern corner of Thessaloniki's acropolis in Greece. Dating back to the Byzantine and Ottoman eras, this architectural marvel is named 'Fortress of Seven Towers,' although it actually boasts ten towers. The name may have been inspired by the Yedikule Fortress in Istanbul, Turkey. The Heptapyrgion's rich history is evident in its intricate stonework and weathered facade. The fortress was initially built during the Byzantine Empire, with additions and modifications made during the Ottoman period. Its strategic location on a hill overlooking the city made it an essential defensive structure. In the photograph, the towers appear majestically against the clear blue sky, with the rubble-strewn ground below hinting at the fortress's long and storied past. The arched gateway, now partially obscured by foliage, adds to the fortress's allure. The Heptapyrgion has served various functions throughout history, including a penitentiary, prison, gaol, and jail. Today, it stands as a testament to Thessaloniki's rich cultural heritage and serves as a popular tourist attraction. This photograph, taken in 1927, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to explore the history and mystery of this remarkable fortress. Thessaloniki, also known as Salonica or Salonika, is a vibrant city in Greece that continues to captivate visitors with its blend of ancient and modern attractions.
