EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the determination and courage of two prominent Suffragettes, Charlotte Despard and Cobden Sanderson, as they stand outside 10 Downing Street in 1909, ready to confront Prime Minister Asquith. The women, both dressed in their suffragette colors, are shown waiting patiently for their turn to be heard, despite the looming presence of a policeman marked by a cross, believed to be Superintendent Cresswell Wells of the Metropolitan Police's A Division. The date was August 19th, and these women, along with other suffragettes, had gathered to demand the right to vote. Their peaceful protest, however, was met with force as they were arrested for obstructing the highway. This arrest was part of a larger campaign of civil disobedience, as suffragettes across the country continued to push for women's suffrage. Charlotte Despard (1844-1935) was a prominent Irish-born suffragette and social reformer, who had been active in the movement since the late 1800s. Cobden Sanderson (1853-1926), on the other hand, was an English artist and suffragette, who had joined the cause later in life. Both women were committed to the cause of women's rights and were willing to risk arrest to bring about change. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by suffragettes during the fight for women's suffrage. It also highlights the important role that peaceful protest and civil disobedience can play in bringing about social change. The image is a valuable historical document, providing insight into a pivotal moment in the history of women's rights and the broader struggle for social justice.
