This image depicts the daring exploits of Jean-Pierre Blanchard and his passenger, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, as they made aviation history on the morning of September 21, 1802. The photograph captures the moment just before their Garnerin balloon, adorned with the vibrant colors of the French flag, began its ascent from North Audley Street in London.
