EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, Frederick William Page is seen deep in thought at his desk in the office of English Electric's Aeronautical Department. The year is 1930, and the pioneering aeronautical engineer is surrounded by the tools of his trade: blueprints, technical drawings, and calculations scattered across his desk. A large model airplane sits proudly on a shelf behind him, a testament to his lifelong passion for flight. Born in 1880, Page began his career as an apprentice engineer with the Great Northern Railway Company in England. However, his true calling came in the form of aviation. He joined the Royal Flying Corps during World War I and rose to the rank of Major, serving as an engineer and test pilot. After the war, he joined the A.V. Roe Company (Avro), where he played a key role in the design and development of several successful aircraft, including the Avro 504 and the Avro Anson. In 1924, Page joined English Electric, where he headed up the Aeronautical Department. Here, he continued his groundbreaking work in aircraft design, focusing on the development of advanced engines and propellers. The photograph captures him in the midst of this creative process, with the weight of his responsibilities and the excitement of innovation evident on his face. Page's contributions to the field of aeronautical engineering were significant, and his work laid the foundation for the development of modern jet engines. Tragically, he died in 1933, at the age of 53, from injuries sustained in a car accident. Today, he is remembered as a visionary engineer and pioneer in the field of aviation, whose legacy continues to inspire and influence generations of aeronautical engineers. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the life and work of Frederick William Page, a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of flight and left an indelible mark on the history of aeronautics.
