EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the front facade of Quex House in Birchington-on-Sea, Kent, during the First World War. The image, taken around 1918, shows the grand Victorian mansion with its intricate stonework and tall chimneys, standing proudly against the backdrop of the English Channel. A small car is parked at the front, adding a sense of modernity to the scene. To the left of the main house, a single-storey drawing room can be seen, which served as A Ward of the Quex Park Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) Hospital. Established in October 1914, the hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, and provided medical care, rehabilitation, and recuperation for wounded soldiers. To the left of the drawing room is the Winter Garden, which was used as the Hospital Mess. The Commandant of the hospital was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940), the founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. The hospital operated from October 1914 until January 1919, providing essential services during a time of great need. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the role that communities played in supporting the war effort during WWI, and the sacrifices made by those who cared for the wounded and sick. The Quex Park VAD Hospital is a significant part of Birchington's history, and this photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, capturing the essence of a bygone era.
