EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 112 from John James Audubon's seminal work, "Birds of America," showcases the Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) in meticulous detail. This exquisite illustration, part of the original double elephant folio printed between 1831 and 1834, was engraved, printed, and hand-colored by R. Havell (& Son) in London. The Downy Woodpecker is depicted perched gracefully on a long, slender branch, its small, compact body adorned with black and white feathers, and its distinctive red crest standing tall. The background of the illustration is adorned with delicate, hand-colored flowers from the Bignoniaceae family, adding a touch of natural beauty to the scene. The Downy Woodpecker, a member of the Aves class and the Picidae family, is shown in the act of perching, its long, curved beak poised for hunting insects and excavating tree bark. This illustration is an excellent example of the botanical precision and ornithological accuracy that Audubon and his team achieved in "Birds of America." The Downy Woodpecker is identified as an Eudicot, Angiosperm, Magnoliophyta, and a member of the Asterid clade. Its scientific name, Picoides pubescens, reflects its place in the avian world, as well as its close relationship to flowering plants. The Downy Woodpecker is a common bird found throughout North America, and its image has become an iconic representation of the natural world in the United States. Audubon's illustration captures the essence of this beloved bird, offering a glimpse into the natural history of North America over 180 years ago.
