EDITORS COMMENTS
At the Battle of Bailen on July 19, 1808, the French army under the command of Marshal Jean-André Armand Stuart, Duke of Beresford, was decisively defeated by the Spanish forces led by General Castaños and General Palafox. The French army, under the leadership of Marshal Jean-Baptiste Dupont, was caught off guard by the Spanish, who had taken advantage of the hilly terrain to launch a surprise attack. In this print, the French soldiers are depicted making their last stand. The square formation, a common military tactic of the time, was intended to provide protection against cavalry charges. However, the Spanish infantry had managed to outflank the French, leaving them vulnerable on both sides. The French soldiers, with determination etched on their faces, continue to fight despite the odds being heavily stacked against them. The print captures the intensity and desperation of the moment, as the outcome of the battle hung in the balance. The Battle of Bailen was a significant turning point in the Peninsular War, which saw the Spanish successfully resist the French invasion. The defeat of the French army marked the end of Napoleon's initial campaign in Spain and paved the way for the eventual expulsion of the French from the Iberian Peninsula. The print serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and resilience of the soldiers on both sides, who fought bravely in the face of adversity.
