EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored botanical print showcases two varieties of Viper's Bugloss (Echium vulgare), specifically the Jersey Viper's Bugloss and the Pale Viper's Bugloss. The image is taken from Joshua Hamilton's "Culpeper's English Family Physician; or Medical Herbal, Enlarged," published in London in 1792. The work was produced under the auspices of Joshua Hamilton, with contributions from Sir John Hill and printed by W. Locke. The Jersey Viper's Bugloss, depicted on the left, is characterized by its vibrant, blue-violet flowers and hairy stems. The plant is native to the Channel Islands, including Jersey, and was traditionally used in herbal medicine for various ailments, including respiratory issues and skin conditions. The Pale Viper's Bugloss, shown on the right, features paler, lavender-blue flowers and smoother stems. This variety is also native to Europe and was used in traditional medicine for similar purposes as the Jersey Viper's Bugloss. The intricate detail and accuracy of this copperplate engraving are a testament to the meticulous work of the botanical illustrators and engravers of the time. The plants are depicted in their natural habitat, with the Jersey Viper's Bugloss growing on a rocky shore and the Pale Viper's Bugloss in a grassy field. The handcoloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the print, making it a valuable addition to any botanical collection.
