EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Lady Diana Cooper, formerly known as Lady Diana Manners, is depicted as a charming china figure, evoking the elegance and allure of the Roaring Twenties in Venice, Italy. The image, taken in 1926, captures Lady Diana in her intended costume for Baroness D'Erlanger's Ball at the Fenice Theatre. The costume, a masked ensemble, was a fancy and intricate creation, reflecting the extravagance and whimsy of the era's social events. However, the evening did not go as planned. Due to the unexpected attendance of the Prince of Piedmont, Italian State etiquette dictated that masks could not be worn in his presence. Disappointed but undeterred, Lady Diana Cooper gracefully adjusted to the situation and instead donned a crinoline and turban for the event. The renowned photographer Cecil Beaton, who visited Venice that season, shared an amusing anecdote about Lady Diana's reaction to the unexpected turn of events. He recounted that she sat furiously picking her nose during the ball, adding a touch of mischief and unconventional charm to the evening. This enchanting photograph, with its rich history and intriguing backstory, offers a glimpse into the opulent world of 1920s European society and the unexpected twists that often accompanied its grand events.
