EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Migliavacca after Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," depicts a knight dressed in the ceremonial robes of the Distinguished Order of the Golden Fleece. Established in 1430 by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, this prestigious chivalric order was open to European monarchs, high-ranking nobles, and ecclesiastical dignitaries. The knight wears a voluminous robe adorned with the emblem of the Golden Fleece, a symbol of the Order's name and origin, which represents the fleece that saved Jason from certain death in Greek mythology. The knight's uniform is completed with a white surcoat, a red sash, and a golden collar, all embellished with the Order's insignia. He also wears a tall, conical hat, known as a morion, which was a common headpiece in the Spanish army during the 1800s. The knight carries a tobacco pipe in his left hand, a popular accessory during this period, and holds a sword in his right. The knight's military background is evident from the various emblems and insignia of other high chivalric orders that adorn his robes. These include the Cross of the Teutonic Order, the Star of the Order of the Garter, and the Cross of the Order of the Bath. The presence of these insignia suggests that this knight may have been a member of multiple orders and held significant military rank, possibly as a commander in the Spanish army during the Napoleonic Wars or the Peninsula War. This illustration, which dates back to 1829, offers a fascinating glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the chivalric orders of the 1800s, as well as the military uniforms and traditions of the time. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the handcoloured engraving bring the image to life, making it a valuable historical and artistic treasure.
