EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite illuminated calendar print from the year 1846 showcases the beauty and intricacy of medieval art, as depicted in Henry Noel Humphreys' "The Illuminated Calendar and Home Diary." For the month of October, the image features a quote from Tyrus, "Octoberus mensis, qui similis est Marci, et in eo simus," which translates to "October is like Mars, let us be in it." Surrounding the quote are various figures and symbols associated with the month. On the left, the figures of Malachi and St. Simon are depicted, with Malachi holding a scroll and St. Simon holding a key, symbolizing the keys to heaven. Above them, the quote "Ezechiel mensis, qui similis est Iudae, et in eo simus," or "Ezechiel is like Judas, let us be in it," is inscribed, referring to the biblical prophet Ezekiel. To the right, a centaur with a bow and arrow is shown, representing the hunting season, while various birds and foliage are scattered throughout the image. Castles and other architectural structures add to the medieval atmosphere. This print is a chromolithograph, a printing technique that uses multiple lithographic stones, one for each color. The intricate details and use of gilt add to the richness and depth of the image. The design is based on a manuscript from the Bibliotheque Royale in Paris, dating back to 1380, which was part of the collection of the Duke of Anjou. The manuscript is an example of the illuminated Books of Hours, which were popular in medieval Europe as personal prayer books and calendars.
