EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelms Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg in 1804, showcases a scene along the Danube River teeming with aquatic life and the art of angling. The image features two prominent fish species native to the Danube: the Danube salmon (Hucho hucho) and the whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus). The Danube salmon, depicted in the foreground, is a large, powerful fish with a distinctive silver color and black spots. Once abundant in the Danube and its tributaries, this species is now considered endangered due to habitat loss, pollution, and overfishing. The whitefish, shown in the background, is a smaller, round-bodied fish with a white belly and dark spots. This species is still relatively common in the Danube and its tributaries. The scene also showcases fishermen in traditional boats, using rod and line to catch their prized catches. The serene river setting, with its gentle current and lush vegetation, creates a picturesque tableau of the natural world and the human connection to it. The engraving was created by Jacob Nilson, a skilled artist and naturalist, under the direction of the Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm. Wilhelm, known as the German Buffon, was a prolific writer and compiler of natural history texts, and his encyclopedia of fish remains an important resource for ichthyology and marine biology studies. This enchanting image not only captures the beauty and diversity of the Danube River's fish population but also highlights the rich cultural history of fishing in Europe.
