EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Plee after an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, showcases three intriguing deep-sea dwellers: the Angler Fish (Lophius piscatorius), Longnose Batfish (Ogcocephalus vespertilio), and Sargassumfish (Histrio histrio). The Angler Fish, with its distinctive bioluminescent lure, is a master of camouflage, attracting unsuspecting prey in the dark depths of the ocean. The Longnose Batfish, with its elongated snout and wing-like pectoral fins, resembles a flying fish out of water. In contrast, the Sargassumfish, also known as the Three-spot Angelfish or Baudroie, is a colorful and vibrant inhabitant of the Sargassum seaweed, often found in warmer waters. This beautiful and intricate engraving, taken from Bernard Germain de Lacepede's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, published in Paris in 1825, provides a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the deep sea and the remarkable adaptations of its inhabitants.
