Mounted Prints from Mary Evans Picture Library
Thomas, Lord Coningsby
Thomas, Lord Coningsby 1656 - 1729 (1692). Bate, Thomas fl. c. 1692. This is the only work known by Thomas Bate, who worked in Ireland towards the end of the seventeenth century. The work, an exquisite oval canvas, was discovered in 1973. Bate is not mentioned in the bible of Irish art studies - Sticklands Dictionary of Irish artists - and only a passing reference is made to him in the eighteenth-century notebooks of George Vertue, who identified Bate as living mostly in Ireland and being well known for painting on glass. Bate was probably a topographical painter and may also have worked as a miniaturist. Lord Coningsby, an ardent supporter of William III, acted as paymaster-general of the Williamite forces in Ireland in 1690. Coningsby fought in the battle of the Boyne and attended King William when he was wounded. In this painting he wears a colourful version of Roman dress, and is shown seated before his residence, Hampton Court. Date: 1692

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oval canvas, painted by the little-known Irish artist Thomas Bate in 1692, depicts Thomas, Lord Coningsby (1656-1729). Bate is an enigma in the world of Irish art, as he is only known to have produced this one work, which was discovered in 1973. He is not mentioned in Sticklands Dictionary of Irish Artists and receives only a passing reference in the eighteenth-century notebooks of George Vertue, who identified Bate as a prolific painter in Ireland, particularly on glass. Lord Coningsby, a fervent supporter of William III, played a significant role in Irish history as the paymaster-general of the Williamite forces in 1690. He fought valiantly in the Battle of the Boyne and stood by King William when he was wounded. In this exquisite painting, Lord Coningsby is depicted in a vibrant Roman-style costume, seated before his residence, Hampton Court. The discovery of this work by Thomas Bate was a revelation, as it provides a glimpse into the artistic talent that existed in Ireland during the late seventeenth century. Despite the lack of extensive documentation about Bate's life and career, this painting is a testament to his skill and artistic vision. The intricate details and rich colors bring Lord Coningsby to life, capturing the essence of a pivotal moment in Irish and British history.
