King Alexander I of Greece and his wife

King Alexander of Greece(1893-1920) with his wife, Madame Aspasia Manos of Athens(1896-1972), a commoner. The unofficial civil marriage ceremony was conducted in secret in November 1919, but was not dynastically recognised by the royal family or state. The couple are pictured here in Paris during their exile from Greece. Due to the controversey surrounding the marriage, Aspasia was styled Princess Aspasia of Greece and Denmark following Alexanders death in 1920

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, King Alexander I of Greece (1893-1920) and his wife, Madame Aspasia Manos of Athens (1896-1972), are captured in an intimate moment during their exile in Paris. The unofficial civil marriage ceremony between the king and the commoner had taken place in secret in November 1919, a controversial move that was not recognized by the royal family or the Greek state at the time. King Alexander I, who ascended to the throne in 1917 following the overthrow of his father, King Constantine I, was under immense pressure to produce an heir to secure the monarchy's future. However, his first marriage to Princess Aspasie of Bulgaria had ended in divorce in 1920, leaving him without an heir. In search of a solution, he turned to Aspasia Manos, a wealthy and influential Greek woman, who was 13 years his junior. Their clandestine union caused a scandal, with many in Greece viewing it as a breach of tradition and a betrayal of the monarchy. Despite the controversy, the couple remained steadfast in their love for each other and continued to live in exile in France. Following Alexander's untimely death in a hunting accident in 1920, Aspasia was granted the title of Princess Aspasia of Greece and Denmark by royal decree, a gesture that was intended to quell the public outrage and secure some measure of legitimacy for their union. This photograph, taken during their exile, captures a tender moment between the king and his wife, offering a glimpse into their private world and the complex dynamics of the Greek monarchy during a tumultuous period in its history.
