EDITORS COMMENTS
Katherine of Aragon, the first queen of Henry VIII, is depicted in this stunning Tudor-era portrait. Born in 1485 in Alcala de Henares, Spain, Katherine was the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic Monarchs of Spain. At the age of fifteen, she was married to Arthur, Prince of Wales, the elder brother of Henry VIII. However, Arthur's untimely death just six months into their marriage left Katherine a widow. Five years later, in 1509, Katherine was married to Henry VIII, who was then the new king of England following the death of his father, Henry VII. Katherine brought with her a substantial dowry, including the valuable lands of the duchy of Lancaster, which secured her position as a powerful and influential queen. This portrait showcases Katherine's elegant and regal attire, typical of the Tudor period. She wears a high-necked, long-sleeved gown, adorned with intricate gold and pearl embroidery. A velvet farthingale, a type of hoop skirt, accentuates her waist, while a richly decorated mantle draped over her shoulders completes the look. Katherine's elaborate headdress, featuring a jeweled diadem and pearl veil, adds to her regal appearance. Despite her strong Spanish heritage, Katherine quickly adapted to English customs and became an influential figure in the English court. She played a significant role in the education of her children, including the future Queen Mary I and Prince Edward VI. However, her marriage to Henry VIII was ultimately dissolved in 1533, following the king's desire to marry Anne Boleyn. Katherine was subsequently imprisoned and later executed in 1536. This portrait is a testament to Katherine's beauty, grace, and strength, capturing the essence of a queen who left an indelible mark on English history.
