Plate 242 from Charles Sigisbert Sonnini's "Oiseaux" (Birds) volume 62, features an intriguing assemblage of three distinctive seabirds: the Fractercula arctica, or Atlantic Puffin, the Uria aalge, or Common Guillemot, and the Alca torda, or Common Murre or Guillemot. This exquisite 18th century illustration, produced between 1751 and 1812, showcases the unique anatomy and striking features of these birds, which belong to the Charadriiformes order and the Alcidae family. The Atlantic Puffin, with its vibrant blue bill and black and white plumage, is often referred to as a "clown of the sea" or a "harlequin bird." Its distinctive face, with its large, colorful bill and expressive eyes, is a favorite among birdwatchers and naturalists.
