EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, depicts two remarkable marine species from European waters: the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) and the Atlantic wolf-fish (Anarhichas lupus). The European eel, a critically endangered elongated fish, is shown in the foreground, its sinuous body undulating gracefully as it swims through the water. The Atlantic wolf-fish, a formidable predator, is depicted in the background, its sharp teeth and wolf-like snout on full display. This illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The meticulous engraving was executed by Massard, under the direction of Turpin. The European eel is a unique species, capable of traveling thousands of miles from its freshwater spawning grounds in the Sargasso Sea to its estuarine and freshwater habitats throughout Europe. The Atlantic wolf-fish, on the other hand, is a powerful predator found in the North Atlantic, preying on a variety of fish and invertebrates. This beautiful and historically significant artwork, which is part of the Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles collection, offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of two intriguing marine species. Its intricate details and vibrant colors bring the underwater world to life, transporting us back in time to an era when natural history was a source of wonder and discovery.
