EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the young and determined face of Captain R.E. Young, M.C. (Military Cross) of the Middlesex Regiment, during his service in the Somme region of France in 1916. The image, taken during the First World War, depicts Captain Young in his military uniform, adorned with the distinguished Military Cross medal, which was awarded for his gallantry in the face of the enemy. Captain Young, whose full name is Stanley Llewellyn Wood, was born in 1888 in England. He joined the Middlesex Regiment in 1907 and saw active service during the First World War, particularly in the Battle of the Somme. The battle, which lasted from July to November 1916, was one of the largest and bloodiest battles in human history, with over one million casualties on both sides. Despite the harsh conditions and the constant threat of danger, Captain Young displayed exceptional courage and leadership, earning him the Military Cross. The citation for his award reads, "For conspicuous gallantry. He led his company in an attack on the enemy's position, and, although severely wounded, continued to encourage and rally his men until the objective was gained." This powerful photograph is a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of Captain Young and the many other soldiers who fought in the First World War. It is a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the enduring legacy of those who served and gave their all for their country.
