Bulgaria - State Railway School No. 17
State Railway School - Railway Regiment of the Ministry of War No.17 (1940-1942) - Bulgaria. Under the Treaty of Neuilly-sur-Seine (1919), Bulgaria had to cover a number of military structures behind semi-civilian ones. The State Railway School was set up to train reservists for NCOs, engineering troops and railway personnel - allowing rapid movement of troops and military equipment. By decree of Tsar Boris III and a special law by the National Assembly, the State Railway School (and its four-year training course) was established. Externally this appeared an average technical school, but the organizational structure was military - students wore uniforms and were under martial law. Date: 1942

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the students of Bulgaria's State Railway School No. 17 during the 1940s. Established under the Treaty of Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1919, Bulgaria was required to conceal military structures behind semi-civilian facades. The State Railway School was founded to train reservists for non-commissioned officers, engineering troops, and railway personnel, enabling swift movement of troops and military equipment in times of conflict. Dressed in uniforms and subjected to martial law, the students of this seemingly ordinary technical school were in fact part of a militaristic organization. By decree of Tsar Boris III and a special law passed by the National Assembly, the school's four-year training course commenced in 1922. The photograph, taken in 1942, shows the students engaged in their studies, their focused expressions hinting at the dual nature of their education. The Treaty of Neuilly-sur-Seine, signed in 1919, marked the end of Bulgaria's involvement in World War I and imposed significant reparations and territorial losses upon the country. The establishment of the State Railway School was just one of many ways in which Bulgaria sought to rebuild its military capabilities while maintaining a civilian facade. This intriguing image offers a glimpse into the past, shedding light on the complex history of Bulgaria during the interwar period.
