EDITORS COMMENTS
This triptych showcases the black guillemot (Cepphus grylle) in its three distinct stages of plumage, beautifully rendered in watercolour, pencil, and gum on paper by the skilled hand of Richard Dunscombe Parker (1805-1881). The black guillemot, also known as the tystie or murre, is a small seabird native to the North Atlantic Ocean. In the first panel, we observe a young black guillemot, still adorned with the downy, speckled feathers of its juvenile plumage. This stage is characterized by a brownish-gray back and wings, with white underparts and a black face mask. The bird's beak is also edged with a yellowish-orange coloration. Moving to the middle panel, the black guillemot has entered its basic plumage, with the majority of its body now black, save for a white belly and underwings. The face mask remains prominent, and the beak has taken on its distinctive orange-red coloration. Finally, in the third panel, the black guillemot is seen in its breeding plumage, with a glossy black body and white underparts. The face mask has expanded to cover the entire head, and the beak is a vibrant red. The black guillemot is an excellent swimmer and diver, and during the breeding season, it nests in crevices along cliffs or in burrows, laying a single egg. Richard Dunscombe Parker was an accomplished Irish natural history illustrator, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to capture the essence of his subjects. This stunning triptych offers a rare glimpse into the transformation of the black guillemot and serves as a testament to Parker's artistic prowess.
