During the 1940s, the RAF (Royal Air Force) sought a high-altitude, jet-powered reconnaissance and medium bomber to challenge the Soviet Union's growing air power. The Canberra, with its sleek design and advanced technology, was the answer. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engines, the Canberra could reach altitudes of over 40,000 feet, breaking numerous world records. The Canberra's debut flight took place on May 5, 1950, and it quickly became a record-breaker. It set a new world record for the longest non-stop transatlantic flight by a jet aircraft, covering a distance of 4,085 miles in just under 11 hours.
