EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Archbishop Randall Thomas Davidson of Canterbury (1848-1930), dressed in full vestments and carrying a crook staff, walks behind the Bishops of London and Salisbury during the Convocation of Canterbury. The Convocation was an annual gathering of the clergy and representatives from the Church of England, held at the time when Parliament opened. The Bishop of London, Arthur Foley Winnington-Ingram (1858-1946), is seen in the center, wearing a mitre and holding a pastoral staff. To his left is the Bishop of Salisbury, John Wordsworth (1843-1911), who is deep in thought, reading from a large book. The trio is surrounded by other clergymen, dressed in their robes and mortarboards, engaged in discussion near the railings of the room. The atmosphere is one of quiet contemplation and serious debate, as the leaders of the Anglican Church in England discuss matters of faith and doctrine. The photograph, taken in the early 1910s during the Edwardian era, is a testament to the rich history and tradition of the Church of England and the important role of its bishops in shaping the religious and political landscape of the time. The image is reminiscent of the crucifix and the cross, symbolizing the deep spiritual connection of the Christian faith.
