EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 3 from John Gould's The Birds of Great Britain, Volume 2 (1873), presents a captivating hand-coloured lithograph of the Common Swift, Apus apus. The swift is depicted in mid-flight, clinging to the side of an old red brick building, with its distinctive curved wings outstretched and its long, slender body in motion. The intricate details of the swift's feathers and the textured bricks of the roof are beautifully rendered in this nineteenth-century illustration. The Common Swift is a member of the Apodidae family, also known as the apodiformes or "without tails" birds, due to their lack of a tail. These birds are renowned for their incredible aerial agility and are often seen soaring high above buildings and open spaces during the daytime hours. In the illustration, the swift appears to be feeding, with its beak open and a morsel of food in its grasp. Swifts are insectivorous, and they spend most of their lives in flight, only landing to breed and nest. The swift's nest, a bulky structure made of mud and saliva, can be found under the eaves of buildings or in crevices. John Gould's The Birds of Great Britain was a groundbreaking work in the field of ornithology, featuring meticulously detailed illustrations of over 600 species of birds found in Great Britain and Ireland. This plate, in particular, showcases the artist's skill in capturing the dynamic motion of the Common Swift in its natural habitat. The hand-colouring adds a vibrant and lifelike quality to the image, making it a stunning addition to any collection of natural history prints.
