EDITORS COMMENTS
Admiral Sir Edward Hobart Seymour (1840-1929) is depicted in this satirical cartoon by the renowned British caricaturist, Spy, published by Vanity Fair on October 31, 1901. Seymour, a distinguished Royal Navy officer, is shown wearing the full uniform of his rank, complete with the Order of the Bath star and sash. The cartoon caption reads, "Admiral Seymour, C.-in-C. China Station, receiving the submission of the Boxers," poking fun at the Admiral's role as the Commander-in-Chief of the China Station during the Boxer Rebellion. The rebellion, which lasted from 1898 to 1901, was a violent anti-foreign movement that targeted Westerners and Chinese Christians in China. Seymour played a significant role in quelling the rebellion and restoring order in the region. This cartoon captures the Admiral's stern demeanor and no-nonsense approach to maintaining British interests in China. The intricate details of Seymour's uniform and the dynamic composition of the image highlight the skill and artistry of Spy, making this a fascinating glimpse into the history of British naval leadership during a time of great global upheaval.
