Devonshire House, Derby a42_00925

Devonshire House, 32 - 36 Corn Market, Derby. The exterior of Devonshire House at 32-36 Corn Market. Devonshire House was built in the mid 18th century as the Derby town house of the Dukes of Devonshire - a place to reside when in Derby for pleasure or civic business. During the 19th and 20th centuries this once grand house saw a gradual decline in social status, prompted in circa 1814, when the 6th Duke opted to stay in alternative accommodation when in town. Devonshire House was converted for commercial use, with shops moving into the ground floor rooms and a market hall being built on the garden. Today only the northern 4 bays (those further from the camera) survive. The remainder was demolished in 1969, to be replaced by a Littlewoods Store (now Primark)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Devonshire House, located at 32-36 Corn Market in Derby. Built during the mid 18th century as the prestigious town house of the Dukes of Devonshire, it served as a luxurious residence for their pleasure and civic affairs. However, as time passed, this magnificent structure witnessed a gradual decline in its social standing. In approximately 1814, the decision made by the 6th Duke to seek alternative accommodations while in town marked a turning point for Devonshire House. Subsequently, commercial use took over its premises with shops occupying the ground floor rooms and a market hall being constructed within its once splendid garden. Today, only the northern four bays of this architectural gem remain intact; those further away from our lens. Sadly, in 1969, much of Devonshire House was demolished to make way for what is now Primark - previously Littlewoods Store. The photograph beautifully captures both the grandeur and transformation that Devonshire House has undergone throughout history. Its Georgian design exudes elegance with Palladian influences evident in its pediment and overall aesthetic appeal. George Bernard Mason's skillful composition allows us to reflect on how urban redevelopment can alter even the most majestic structures over time. This image serves as a poignant reminder of change and decline but also highlights our ability to appreciate historical remnants amidst modern transformations.
