Wax jack owned by the Dennis Family, early 19th century. Creator: Unknown

The taper holder is a silver plated piece with three hallmarks or makers marks pressed into the rim of the saucer/dish base. The center of the dish curves upward to support two curved parabolic prongs which curve out and up before meeting again at the top of the piece where they support a small metal cylinder with a circle cut in its center. A spool of candle wax wound on a thin metal rod with an oval handle is parallel to the base; the wax taper is threaded through the round metal piece at the top. There is a silver handle melded to rim just under the oval handle of the spool which unspools the beeswax taper. A small cone shaped candle-snuffer is attached to the PL prong by a hanging chain

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Wax Jack owned by the Dennis Family in the early 19th century. Crafted with intricate detail, this silver-plated taper holder is an exquisite example of heritage artistry. The saucer/dish base bears three hallmarks or makers marks, adding to its allure. The centerpiece of this wax jack gracefully curves upward, supporting two elegant parabolic prongs that meet at the top to hold a small metal cylinder with a circular cutout. A spool of candle wax, wound on a thin metal rod and accompanied by an oval handle, rests parallel to the base. The beeswax taper is threaded through the round metal piece atop. Notably, there is also a silver handle melded to the rim just beneath the oval handle of the spool; it allows for easy unspooling of the candle's taper. Additionally, attached to one prong is a small cone-shaped candle-snuffer connected by a delicate hanging chain. This extraordinary artifact provides insight into both African American history and technological advancements during that era. Its presence in the National Museum of African American History and Culture serves as a testament to its significance within our cultural heritage. As we admire this photograph captured by an unknown creator, we are transported back in time - envisioning how this wax jack once illuminated homes across America in its heyday during the 19th century.
