The Infant Orphan Asylum at Wanstead, 1862. Creator: Unknown
The Infant Orphan Asylum at Wanstead, 1862. Dr. Andrew Reed became aware of the necessity of...[an] institution for infants...the board of the London asylum was...besieged by widows who found their hands so tied by the little children as to render exertion for the rest of the family an utter impossibility...[Dr Reed] addressed a touching appeal to the public, and temporarily took some little ones into his own house. Friends and money soon came to his assistance...the present palatial home was...at first designed to receive orphan children without distinction from the earliest period to the age of seven...[but] is now intended "to board, clothe, and educate in the principles of the Church of England, the boys until they attain fourteen, and the girls fifteen, years of age." The asylum is delightfully situated, about seven miles from London; it is equal to the accommodation of 600 children, and is the largest institution of its kind in England. The educational department comprises four extensive schools, and is under the best superintendence. The asylum was incorporated in 1843; its annual expenditure is above £13, 000; and it is possessed of funded property from which is realised about £1300 a year'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the Infant Orphan Asylum at Wanstead in 1862, a sanctuary for hundreds of vulnerable children in need of care and education. The asylum was the brainchild of Dr. Andrew Reed, who in the mid-19th century became acutely aware of the plight of widows struggling to provide for their young orphaned children, rendering them unable to work and support their families. Dr. Reed's heartfelt appeal to the public sparked an outpouring of support, and the asylum's humble beginnings saw him temporarily taking in a few children into his own home. As the institution grew, it evolved into a palatial home capable of accommodating up to 600 children. Initially designed to cater to orphans from infancy until the age of seven, it now extends its care and education to boys until they reach fourteen and girls until they turn fifteen. The asylum's picturesque location, about seven miles from London, offers a respite from the urban hustle and bustle. The asylum's educational department is a testament to its commitment to nurturing and shaping the future generations. Four extensive schools cater to the children's needs, and the institution is under the watchful supervision of dedicated educators. Established in 1843, the Infant Orphan Asylum at Wanstead is the largest of its kind in England, with an annual expenditure of over £13,000 and a substantial funded property that generates around £1,300 in yearly revenue. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of the compassion and generosity that came together to create a haven for the most vulnerable members of society, providing them with a solid foundation for a brighter future.
