An Engagement against the Hovas of Madagascar, 1883-1896

An Engagement against the Hovas of Madagascar. 1883-1896. France invaded Madagascar in 1883 in what became known as the first Franco-Hova War (Hova being the name of the islands Merina aristocrats), seeking to restore property that had been confiscated from French residents. Prior to the French intervention Madagascar was an independent kingdom ruled by the Merina dynasty, but after the war, increasing French interference meant another war broke out in 1895. By the end of the Second Franco-Hova War in 1896 France ruled the island as a protectorate, the monarchy had been abolished and the royal family exiled to Algeria

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "An Engagement against the Hovas of Madagascar, 1883-1896" captures a significant moment in history when France invaded Madagascar in 1883. This marked the beginning of the first Franco-Hova War, as they aimed to restore property that had been confiscated from French residents on the island. Prior to this invasion, Madagascar was an independent kingdom ruled by the Merina dynasty. However, French interference escalated after their initial intervention, leading to another war in 1895. The Second Franco-Hova War concluded in 1896 with France establishing its rule over Madagascar as a protectorate. As a result of these conflicts, the monarchy was abolished and the royal family exiled to Algeria. In this image, we see soldiers dressed in uniforms and pith helmets engaging in battle amidst a picturesque countryside setting. Armed with rifles and guns, they advance through nature's lush greenery towards their adversaries. The lithograph print showcases vivid colors that bring life to this historical event from the late nineteenth century. This photograph serves as a reminder of colonialism's impact on Africa during this era and highlights both military strategy and weaponry used during warfare at that time. It provides us with valuable insights into one chapter of Madagascar's complex history under foreign rule while also showcasing artistry through its meticulous execution by AccuSoft Inc. , who holds all rights reserved for this compelling piece of visual storytelling.
