EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable Edmund Cartwright, a British clergyman and inventor of the power loom. Created by artist J Thomson in the 19th century, this portrait showcases Cartwright's significant contributions to both science and industry. In 1785, Cartwright revolutionized textile manufacturing with his invention of the mechanical loom. This groundbreaking machine made it possible to weave wide cotton cloth efficiently for the first time, earning it the title of "parent of the modern power loom". But Cartwright's innovative spirit didn't stop there. In 1789, he also invented a wool combing machine and later developed a steam engine that utilized alcohol as fuel in 1797. Beyond his inventions, Cartwright played an instrumental role in assisting Robert Fulton with experiments related to steam navigation. His dedication to advancing technology was matched only by his commitment to his faith as a clergyman. This engraving portrays Reverend Edmund Cartwright during the eighteenth century—a man whose brilliance transcended boundaries between religion and innovation. As we gaze upon this image today, we are reminded of his lasting impact on society and how one individual's determination can shape history.
