EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the portrait of Anne of Cleves, painted by the talented artist Hans Holbein the Younger in 1539. Anne, born in 1515 and passing away in 1557, was famously known as The Flanders Mare due to her lack of physical appeal to King Henry VIII. This unflattering nickname stemmed from their ill-fated marriage. The image showcases Anne wearing a stunning dress with elaborate sleeves that were characteristic of the fashion during the sixteenth century. Her Flemish heritage is evident through her headdress and headgear, adding a touch of regality to her appearance. Despite being labeled as unattractive by King Henry VIII, this portrait reveals Anne's dignified presence and royal aura. As Queen Consort of England during her brief marriage to Henry VIII, she held an important position within Tudor society. This illustration comes from A. F Pollard's book "Henry VIII" published by Goupil & Co in London, New York, Paris, and Edinburgh in 1902. The monochrome nature of this print adds a timeless quality to it while emphasizing the intricate details captured by Holbein's brushstrokes. As we gaze upon this historical artifact today, we are reminded not only of Anne's place within English royalty but also of Hans Holbein's artistic prowess in immortalizing his subjects on canvas for generations to come.
