The textile industry flourished in Dundee and at its peak employed 50, 000 people. The area around the city is used for fruit growing, which is the foundation for a thriving jam industry founded by Mrs Keiller, who began making the famous Dundee marmalade in 1797. Captain Scott?s ship ?Discovery? was built in the local shipyards on Tayside for its journey to the Antarctic in 1901 and has recently been restored for the city to display in dry dock as a tourist attraction.
