Pilgrims Flask, c. 1099-1200 (lead)
500276 Pilgrims Flask, c.1099-1200 (lead) by Crusader Period (1095-1291); h:4.30 w:2.90 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: After the Crusader conquest of the Holy Land in 1099, Jerusalem experienced a revival of Christian pilgrimage. During the 12th century, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher was rebuilt, redecorated, and reconsecrated. With the influx of new pilgrims, especially from Western Europe, lead ampullae (small flasks) such as this very rare example were briefly reintroduced. The flask was cast with images of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and Christs Descent into Limbo (Anastasis), establishing a visual connection with the holy sites of Christs death and entombment.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Pilgrims Flask, a remarkable artifact from the Crusader Period (1095-1291). Crafted from lead and measuring 4.30 cm in height and 2.90 cm in width, this flask is currently housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. The period following the Crusader conquest of the Holy Land in 1099 witnessed a resurgence of Christian pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which had been destroyed during previous conflicts, was rebuilt and adorned anew during the 12th century. This revival attracted numerous pilgrims from Western Europe. To commemorate these holy sites associated with Christ's death and entombment, small flasks called ampullae were briefly reintroduced. The featured Pilgrims Flask is an exceedingly rare example of such an ampulla made out of lead. It bears intricate cast images depicting both the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and Christ's Descent into Limbo (Anastasis), establishing a visual connection with these sacred locations. Gifted to the museum by Bruce Ferrini in memory of Robert P. Bergman, this piece offers us a glimpse into medieval religious practices and serves as a testament to both Byzantine artistry and European devotion during this tumultuous era marked by crusades and spiritual journeys.
