EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the delicate moment of a Cynthia Silkmoth female (Samia cynthia) laying its eggs on a leaf of a Tree-of-Heaven (Ailanthus) in South East Asia. The Tree-of-Heaven, originally from Asia, has been acclimatized in France and Europe, providing a suitable habitat for this beautiful silkmoth species. The Cynthia Silkmoth is a large and impressive insect, with a wingspan of up to 15 cm. The female is characterized by her bright orange and black coloration, while the male is more slender and has iridescent green wings. During the moth's development, the female lays her eggs on the leaves of the host plant. Once hatched, the caterpillars feed on the leaves before entering the pupa stage, where they form a cocoon and transform into an adult moth. This photograph, taken by renowned wildlife photographer Pascal Goetgheluck, showcases the intricate relationship between the Cynthia Silkmoth and its host plant, the Tree-of-Heaven. It is a reminder of the beauty and importance of biodiversity, both in its native habitats and in places where it has been introduced.
