EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph taken in May 1958, Rodmarton Platform in Gloucestershire stands as a testament to the uncomplicated charm of rural railway halts. The 150-foot long wooden platform, constructed from reclaimed railway sleepers, exudes a sense of tranquility and simplicity. At the platform's end, a standard design corrugated iron shelter, affectionately referred to as a 'pagoda,' provides shelter from the elements for passengers. Access to the platform is via a set of steps leading from the road that runs beneath the railway. Rodmarton Platform, a quintessential halt on the Tetbury Branch Line, first opened its doors to travelers in 1904. The halt's design and construction reflect the functional yet aesthetically pleasing engineering of the era. By 1958, the platform had already seen over five decades of service, bearing witness to the comings and goings of locals and visitors alike. The photograph captures the essence of a bygone era, transporting us back to a time when train travel was a more leisurely experience. The image is a poignant reminder of the role that small, isolated halts like Rodmarton played in connecting communities and providing essential transport links. This photograph, taken just three years before the halt's closure in 1964, is a precious record of a simpler time in railway history.
