Soviet rocket scientists
Sergei Korolev (1907-1966), pioneering Soviet rocket scientist, with other scientists from GIRD, the Moscow Group for Reactive Motion. Korolev is far left. In the centre is one of their early rockets. After developing an interest in rocketry, Korolev formed GIRD who, in 1933, launched the USSRs first liquid-fueled rocket. It was powered by a gasoline and oxygen mixture, reaching a height of 400 metres and landing 150 metres from the launch site. After the Second World War Korolev worked developing rockets, both for space exploration and for military use. His most famous was Vostok 1, which carried the first man into space. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history, showcasing the brilliant minds behind Soviet rocketry. In the forefront stands Sergei Korolev, an esteemed pioneer of Soviet rocket science, alongside his fellow scientists from GIRD (the Moscow Group for Reactive Motion). The year is either 1933 or 1934, when their groundbreaking achievements were just beginning to take shape. At the center of attention lies one of their early rockets, symbolizing the immense potential that lay within these visionary individuals. It was with this very rocket that GIRD launched the USSR's first liquid-fueled creation – a remarkable feat in itself. Powered by a mixture of gasoline and oxygen, it soared to an impressive height of 400 meters before gracefully landing only 150 meters away from its launch site. The historical significance of this photograph extends far beyond those early days. Following World War II, Korolev continued his tireless work in developing rockets for both space exploration and military purposes. His most renowned accomplishment came with Vostok 1 – the spacecraft responsible for carrying humanity's first astronaut into space. As we gaze upon this image frozen in time, we are reminded not only of Korolev's extraordinary contributions but also of the collective brilliance possessed by these engineers and scientists who propelled Soviet Union's advancements in space flight during the mid-20th century.
