Hering illusion

Hering illusion. This illusion was created by the physiologist Edward Hering in the 19th century. It exploits the brains understanding of perspective to fool it into thinking that the two horizontal red lines bow outwards. In fact they are straight and parallel. This is achieved due to the presence of the grey lines radiating from a point. They give the illusion of depth. In this 2D representation of 3D space a straight line would be drawn curving slightly inwards, since the part in the middle seems lower than that at the side. So, similarly, a straight line in 2D space represents a slight outwards curve in 3D space

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing Hering illusion, a visual trickery that has fascinated minds since its creation by physiologist Edward Hering in the 19th century. The image cunningly exploits our brain's understanding of perspective, fooling it into perceiving two horizontal red lines as bowing outwards when they are actually straight and parallel. The key to this illusory effect lies in the presence of grey lines radiating from a point, creating an illusion of depth within a 2D representation of 3D space. In this context, a seemingly straight line is drawn with a slight inward curve because the middle section appears lower than its sides. Consequently, what we perceive as a straight line in 2D space translates into an outward curve in 3D space. This optical marvel not only challenges our vision but also delves into the realms of psychology and perception. It highlights how easily our brains can be deceived by ambiguous visual cues, reminding us that what we see may not always align with reality. As we delve deeper into neuroscience and explore illusions like these, we uncover more about the intricacies of human vision and how our brains interpret the world around us. This remarkable photograph serves as both an artistic representation and scientific exploration – capturing the essence of hering illusion while leaving us captivated by its enigmatic beauty.
