Eyelash mite, SEM Z445 / 0308
Eyelash mite. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an eyelash, or follicle, mite (Demodex folliculorum), a harmless parasite which lives inside human hair follicles. This mite infests hair follicles (depressions in the skin which contain the roots of hairs) around the eyelids, nose and in the ear canals of humans. It feeds on oily secretions from the skins sebaceous glands, which empty into the follicles, as well as dead skin cells. Infestation with follicle mites is usually symptomless; they cause no harm to their host. However, allergic reactions to the mites in susceptible individuals can cause hair loss and acne. Magnification: x298 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of the eyelash mite, Demodex folliculorum. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we get a close-up view of this harmless parasite that resides within human hair follicles. The mite primarily infests hair follicles around the eyelids, nose, and ear canals, where it feeds on oily secretions from sebaceous glands and dead skin cells. Despite its presence in large numbers on most individuals, infestation with these tiny creatures usually goes unnoticed as they cause no harm to their hosts. However, for some susceptible individuals, allergic reactions to the mites can lead to hair loss and acne. With a magnification of x298 at 6x7cm size, this SEM image allows us to appreciate the remarkable details of these arachnida-like organisms. Their delicate bodies are perfectly adapted for life within our hair follicles. While they may be considered ectoparasites due to their parasitic nature, it is important to note that these mites are also commensal organisms – meaning they coexist with humans without causing any significant harm or benefit. This mesmerizing photograph not only highlights the beauty found in even the tiniest corners of nature but also serves as a reminder of the complex relationships between different species that exist all around us.
