Early petrol motors, historical artwork. The first commercially successful petrol-driven motors were built in the second half of the 19th century by the Belgian Etienne Lenoir. At top left and top right are two of Ottos engines, whilst at bottom left is a petrol motor boat, with its engine at bottom right. Taken from Brockhaus Konversations Lexikon 1895

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the early petrol motors that revolutionized the world of technology in the late 19th century. The historical artwork depicts a significant milestone in human innovation, highlighting the first commercially successful petrol-driven motors. Etienne Lenoir, a brilliant Belgian engineer, laid the foundation for these groundbreaking engines. However, it was Nicolaus Otto who further refined Lenoir's design and introduced his remarkable 4-stroke petrol engine in 1876. Collaborating with automobile pioneers Daimler and Maybach, Otto paved the way for future advancements in motor technology. The top left and top right corners of this print exhibit two of Otto's extraordinary engines, showcasing their intricate details and mechanical complexity. Meanwhile, at the bottom left corner stands an awe-inspiring petrol motor boat powered by one of these innovative engines. Transporting us back to a time when internal combustion engines were still novel concepts, this engraving from Brockhaus Konversations Lexikon (1895) captures both the quartet of technological marvels and their impact on history. It serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of progress during an era defined by rapid industrialization. With its monochrome aesthetic lending an air of nostalgia to this image, Science Photo Library beautifully preserves this piece of our technological heritage for generations to come.
