Coloured satellite image of Hurricane Pauline
Hurricane Pauline. Coloured computer three- dimensional reconstruction, based on satellite data, of Hurricane Pauline off the coast of Mexico (green). North is towards top. The hurricane is the white swirl of clouds (lower centre) surrounding the central eye, an area of calmer air at very low pressure. Winds reached 184 kilometres per hour around the eye, which, coupled with heavy rainfall, resulted in over 230 deaths in Mexico. Hurricanes form in the tropics due to large-scale evaporation and convection over warm seas. This image was taken on 7 October 1997 by the American GOES-8 satellite

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured satellite image of Hurricane Pauline, a powerful and devastating storm that struck off the coast of Mexico. Created through a three-dimensional computer reconstruction using satellite data, this image provides an incredible visual representation of the hurricane's immense force. The vibrant green hues depict the intensity and magnitude of this natural phenomenon. At the heart of this swirling mass lies the eye, an area characterized by calmness amidst chaos, where air pressure is remarkably low. Surrounding it are dense clouds forming a white spiral that stretches across the lower center of the image. With winds reaching an astonishing 184 kilometers per hour around its core, Hurricane Pauline unleashed its fury upon Mexico, resulting in over 230 tragic deaths. The formation of hurricanes like Pauline arises from large-scale evaporation and convection over warm seas in tropical regions. This particular snapshot was captured on October 7th, 1997 by America's GOES-8 satellite – offering us a unique perspective from space. As we gaze at this awe-inspiring photograph, we are reminded not only of nature's breathtaking beauty but also its potential for destruction. It serves as a poignant reminder to respect and understand these severe storms while highlighting their impact on climate patterns worldwide. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an extraordinary glimpse into meteorology and weather phenomena through their remarkable collection.
