Meteor crater, Arizona
Meteor Crater. Aerial view of Meteor Crater, near Winslow in northeast Arizona, USA. It is also called the Barringer Crater, after the mining engineer who first suggested that it was formed by a meteor impact. It is about 50, 000 years old and is about 200 metres deep and 800 metres across. Several attempts to mine the iron-rich material of the meteor were made before a visitor centre was built in the 1960 s. Two new minerals - coesite and stishovite - were identified here; both are forms of silica created at high temperatures and pressures. In recent years the crater has been used for astronaut training & studies in planet comparison

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view captures the awe-inspiring Meteor Crater in Arizona, USA. Also known as Barringer Crater, this geological wonder was named after the brilliant mining engineer who proposed that it was formed by a meteor impact. With an estimated age of 50,000 years, this colossal crater stretches approximately 800 meters across and plunges to a staggering depth of 200 meters. The significance of Meteor Crater extends beyond its sheer size and beauty. It has served as a site for numerous attempts to extract the iron-rich material from the meteor before ultimately becoming home to a visitor center in the 1960s. Notably, this remarkable location unveiled two new minerals - coesite and stishovite - both forms of silica created under extreme temperatures and pressures. In recent times, Meteor Crater has become more than just a tourist attraction; it serves as an invaluable training ground for astronauts and facilitates studies on planet comparison. Its unique characteristics make it an ideal setting for simulating extraterrestrial environments. This mesmerizing print from Science Photo Library encapsulates not only the environmental grandeur but also highlights how scientific exploration can unravel mysteries hidden within our own planet's history.
